“Hi, I’m Samuel Blyth. You may call me Sam and nice to meet you.” Kulit dia ni memang cerah gila, silau mata aku. Hensem? Boleh tahan la. Hahaha. Gerenti pas ni hero sekolah si Kamal Lagak tu bengang bila dapat tau yang he has got a competitor! Aku tak sabar nak tengok reaksi dia.;)
“ok Sam… is there any question that you want to ask Sam?” chewah. Speaking habis Puan Darwina, penolong kanan HEP kitorang. Memang dia terror pun so tak kisah la.
“oh, by the way, Samuel here can only speak English. So please, those who are good in English please be with him all the time. Siapa dalam kelas ni terror English?” Tanya Pn Darwina lagi.
Serentak semua mata tertumpu kat aku. At least nama sekolah and nama Malaysia kena jaga beb.
“ok then. That is settled. Riani, boleh tak awak pindah tempat untuk beberapa lama ni? Saya nak Samuel duduk sebelah Raihan selama 2 minggu ni supaya senang apa-apa hal nanti. Ok?”
Apa? Sebelah aku? Riani! Aku pandang riani yang sudah mempamerkan riak wajah simpati.
“sorry yan. Don’t worry, aku pindah tempat sementara je. Rileks la. Dia pun orang jugak. Cuma cerah terlebih je.” Gurau riani. Sempat aja. Aku tersenyum pahit. Riani mengemas barang-barang and berpindah ke sebelah Helmi yang sememangnya kosong.
“ok Samuel. You may bring your stuff and seat there and by the way, she is Raihan Amani.” Aku pandang dia, dia pandang aku. Sedar-sedar, dia dah bergerak menghampiri aku dan duduk sebelah aku.
What to do now? Aku dah gelabah. Puan Darwina keluar untuk memberi peluang kelas berjalan seperti biasa tapi cikgu Add Math kitorang tak sampai-sampai lg. budak-budak lain still membisu macam baru lepas kena kejutan elektrik. Aku? Tengah berfikir-fikir my next move and baru aku nak beramah mesra dia dh start dulu.
“hi. What is your name again?” aku tersenyum nipis.:)
“er, Raihan but you may call me Yan.” Rileks. Ini peluang aku praktis English aku, betol tak?
“pardon?” berkerut-kerut dahi dia.
Aku amik kertas and pen, aku tulis nama aku.
“this is it. My name, Yan.” Aku unjukkan tulisan tu padanya.
“oh I see. Yan” aku ketawa kecil.lawak la cara dia sebut nama aku. Slanga dia tu membuatkan nama aku berbunyi lain.
“why are you laughing?” berkerut-kerut dahinya.:D
“oh, nothing. The way you pronounce my name, it’s very different from its real sound. But never mind. I don’t mind that.” Senang pulak bercakap dengan dia.
“really, oh, by the way, nice to meet you.” Dia menghulurkan tangannya untuk berjabat. Aku terdiam.
“sorry Samuel. I’m a muslim and I am not allowed to have contact with other guys’ skin accept for my close relatives and siblings. It’s sinful.”
“oh really? Well, then. So, how do you greet people? I mean, those whom you can’t shake hands with.”
“well, we will just say our prayer upon them and that’s all. In fact, the prayer is far more meaningful than the touching.” Aku menerangkan. Cheh, cam ustazah Bahyah lak rasanya. Hahaha! Then datang la cikgu kitorang and kelas pun start cam biasa.
Tp penat gak aku nak translate benda-benda yang dia tak faham. Mujurla kitorang belajar dalam English. So, tak ada la susah sangat. Lagipun, rupa-rupanya dia ni bukan la nak belajar tapi sebenarnya nak buat kajian and pemerhatian tentang orang melayu Malaysia. Kang jadi bahan kajian lak. Baru betul.
Waktu rehat tu, dia ikut pegi kantin and cuba makanan kitorang. Ramai yang menjeling tengok kitorang yang macam kopi susu ni tapi aku buat dek je.
Masa tengah makan tu, dia Tanya lagi.
“why is it some of the students here don’t wear the scarf like yours? They wear shorter scarves. I don’t see the relevant of this.”
“in Islam it is stated that we must wear the scarf passed our chest but not all of the Muslims comprehend to that not because we are not united but there must be reasons for that. Only they know why. Some of us don’t even wear the scarves but that does not show their real faith. I believe in one thing. The way you dress will not reflect your attitude but your attitude will reflect your faith. Nowadays, scarves are more towards fashion but not religion. So, basically, it may appear as irrelevant to you but that’s how it is. You know that. Don’t judge a book by its cover. Even if you look at me wearing like this, it does not mean that I’m better than them. I know some people who are better than me though they are not wearing scarves. That’s the fact. We may live differently but we hold to the same principle. Even in your religion there are people who don’t go to church as required right? So it is very much the same. In every religion there are protesters and loyal followers. It depends on the individual, right? We will never know what is in their heart. So we can’t judge them by their looks.” Terangku melebar-lebar.
Aku perasan dia diam je. Mata biru dia melekat terus ke muka aku. Aku terus check pipi aku. Kot-kot ada nasik terlekat ke. Tak ada pun.
“ermm, is there something on my face?”
“what? Oh no, I’m just fascinated by the way you speak. And the thing you said. It’s very much true. So tell me Yan, how will you know people’s faith? How can we see that since we cannot judge them by their looks?”
“well, for me it’s simple. As human we can only tell that by observing their action. Whether they are following the guidance or not, we can see that by their practices in life. For example, in Islam, couples cannot live in together not until they are married. If they still do so, it means that their faith is not strong. But sometimes, u cannot tell if a person who seems to be a very loyal follower is true or not. This is because we have this thing called sincerity and that is the thing that comes between a person and God. Even if the person looks true and follows all the religious rules, but if he is not sincere, he will only waste his time. He will get nothing.”
